There are some medical conditions which require special consideration prior to massage and other soft tissue treatments.

Localised contraindications to treatments : In general treatments can still be given but the localised area will be avoided.

  • Broken bones
  • Bruising
  • Open wounds
  • Varicose veins
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Acute injury where redness, heat and swelling are all present
  • Sunburn and burns
  • Skin infections
  • Scar tissue up to 3 months post-op
  • Hernia

Systemic contraindications to treatments: Unfortunately the presence of these conditions will mean that I will be unable to treat you at this time.

  • You are feeling unwell
  • Viral/ bacterial infections, e.g. cold, flu, cough
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis
  • Under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Some medication
  • Skin infections
  • Cancer

Further information and in some cases a referral from a GP would be required prior to treatment when the following are present.

  • Sciatica HRT medication – due to the increased risk of DVT
  • Cancer in the later stage
  • Pregnancy (the abdomen will be avoided but GP or midwife consent will be required)
  • Severe acne
  • Pins and plates
  • Some medication
  • Nerve conditions, e.g. constant numbness, constant pins and needles and diagnosed neural conditions
  • Heart conditions
  • Blood pressure conditions
  • Epilepsy
  • Asthma
  • Diabetes
  • Osteoporosis

During your initial consultation we will complete a consultation form together.
